The effects of massage.

Massage is such an effective, wonderful therapy because it is so widely applicable. Massage involves touch, warmth and pressure, which are sensations that stimulate comfort and relaxation - the prerequisites for effective recovery and healing.

Massage is such an effective, wonderful therapy because it is so widely applicable. Massage involves touch, warmth and pressure, which are sensations that stimulate comfort and relaxation – the prerequisites for effective recovery and healing.

Muscles can become tight, painful and cold for various reasons. Injury through overuse or strain leads to these conditions gradually or suddenly depending on the affecting factors. Massage warms through touch and pressure. Local blood circulation is stimulated and blood is able to flow freely again as muscle fibres soften and loosen and lengthen through the application of massage.

Tired and damaged muscle can feel hard or lumpy in places. These are areas where muscle fibres adhere to one another and become tangled. These normally parallel fibres can no longer contract and stretch effectively. Local circulation is also compromised.  This affects the ability of the muscle to work as well as it could and other fibres in the muscle take up the slack, working hard and in turn becoming overused and painful.

The deep tissue massage techniques used at Phil Brown Massage soften and warm the muscle and then work to break up these adhesions,  allowing blood and healing nutrients to flow freely into the damaged areas and encourage swifter healing.

Remedial massage will also break up the scar tissue that forms following a strain or sprain or other trauma to the body, such as a surgical procedure. Using massage to break up this scar tissue is very effective at restoring full range of movement to joints and muscle groups. Often, through too much inactivity following injury, this scar tissue is left alone and movement in the body is compromised by relatively minor muscular injuries. With effective remedial massage, this need not be the case.

Your muscles can become damaged, tight and painful through strains or sprains,  chronic tension and stress, bad posture at work or unhelpful patterns of movement. Perhaps you have limited movement in a joint or joints as a result of an old injury or surgery. Phil Brown Massage provides effective treatment for all these situations.

If you are a sportsperson or fitness enthusiast, then your muscles are getting damaged as a normal part of the training you are putting them through. The difficulty is making sure you don’t overtrain and damage them to the point where your recovery between sessions is hampered. This can stop your progress and eventually lead to acute injury and a complete stop to the activities you love. Regular sports massage at Phil Brown Massage will greatly reduce the chances of this occurring and actually improve the rate and quality of your recovery between sessions. Then you can put more into your training sessions and get more out of them!
